Medstar’s critical care, interfacility, and air medical transport services are designed to safely move the most complex and critically ill patients between hospitals and specialized care centers. These transports often involve patients who require advanced monitoring, ventilator support, vasoactive medications, blood products, or other intensive therapies that must be maintained continuously during transport. Medstar’s transport teams are specifically trained and equipped to manage these patients while ensuring seamless continuity of care between the sending and receiving medical teams.

A defining feature of Medstar’s transport programs is the advanced training and certification of our clinicians. Critical care paramedics and flight nurses operate under some of the most rigorous clinical education standards in the region. In addition to their professional licensure, Medstar clinicians pursue nationally recognized specialty certifications that represent the highest external benchmarks in transport medicine and critical care.

Medstar paramedics and nurses maintain certifications such as Univeristy of Marlyland Critical Care Paramedic (UMBC-CCP), Pediatric Critical Care Paramedic, Neonatal Resuscitation, Flight Paramedic (FP-C), Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), and Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN). These credentials reflect extensive education and demonstrated expertise in critical care transport medicine, including ventilator management, advanced airway care, hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive medication management, trauma resuscitation, neonatal and pediatric transport, and complex medical patient management.

To support these standards, we invest in ongoing clinical education and advanced training for our critical care teams. Clinicians participate in advanced simulation  training, continuing education in specialty transport programs that reinforce the complex skills required to safely move critically ill patients outside of the hospital environment. These training efforts ensure that Medstar clinicians remain aligned with national best practices in transport medicine and maintain the clinical readiness required for high-acuity patient care.

Medstar’s crtiical care teams are also supported by physician leadership and clinical oversight that guide treatment protocols, quality improvement, and patient care standards across the organization. This structure allows Medstar to maintain a clinical program that reflects current critical care practices and continuously evaluates patient outcomes to improve the care delivered during transport.

Combined with advanced medical equipment, specialized transport vehicles, and integration with hospital care teams, Medstar’s highly trained paramedics and flight nurses provide hospitals with a dependable and clinically advanced solution for interfacility and critical care transport. The result is a transport system capable of safely managing some of the most medically complex patients while maintaining the highest standards of care throughout the transfer process.
