Medstar Officially Opens a New Station in Detroit

Medstar leadership cut the ribbon on a new station in Detroit,on July 16 at 4:30 pm. The event marked a major step toward expanding emergency, critical care, and interfacility patient service in the greater Detroit area and building a Detroit-based EMS workforce.
The new facility, located at 93 Piquette Avenue, will serve as a deployment site for units serving in the Grosse Pointe communities, Harper Woods, and surrounding Detroit neighborhoods. It will also support critical care and interfacility transports for major hospital systems in the city, including Henry Ford Health. When fully operational, the facility will deploy 25 Advanced and Basic Life Support ambulances, four critical care units, and Medstar’s special event division, serving all events at Comerica Park, Little Caesar’s Arena, and the Fox Theater.
The 14,000 square foot facility includes a large fleet garage, a 40 person classroom, a training lab and simulator room, crew lounge, a dispatch center, conference rooms, and administrative offices. Medstar’s accredited EMT and paramedic education programs will be offered at the facility, giving Detroit residents access to high-quality EMS training and a direct pathway to employment. The facility will also host CPR, AED, First Aid, and other public training programs, offered regularly for residents, schools, faith groups, and community organizations.
“Our goal is to continue to grow our strong, dedicated EMS workforce that reflects the communities we serve,” said Kolby Miller, Medstar Chief Executive. “That means training new providers from the neighborhoods near our new facility, as well as creating opportunities for experienced EMS professionals from the area to join a team that values skill, experience and local leadership.”
Detroit City Council President, Mary Sheffield added, “I applaud Medstar’s investment in Detroit, not only for strengthening emergency response, but for creating real opportunities for our residents. This new station is more than a base for ambulances; it’s a hub for training, jobs, and community empowerment. I’m proud to support this step forward in public safety and workforce development.”
Medstar is a not-for-profit partnership of the Henry Ford Health and McLaren Healthcare systems, and is the largest provider of 911 response, critical care transport, and interfacility ambulance transports in Michigan. The new facility enhances Medstar’s presence throughout Michigan, including operating hubs in Clinton Township in Macomb County, Mundy Township in Genesee County, and stations in Bay City, Lansing, Lapeer, Novi, and Lincoln Park.
